Buy and Sell Stuff on Twitter Classifieds?

In: Twitter

ilist-logoMove over Craigslist and eBay, there’s a new classifieds in town. iList Micro is is an interesting new classifieds site that uses Twitter. You simply add the hashtags #ihave if you’re selling something or #iwant if you want to buy something and the iList Micro robot grabs it and posts it on their list. If you follow @microilist and they see that your tweet matches up with another user’s, they’ll direct message both of you.

iList Micro is brought to you by iList, an interesting online classifieds that lets you notify your social network friends on Twitter, Facebook, Gmail, Yahoo and MySpace when you post a classified ad.

I hope they have moderators checking the Twitter classifieds before they get posted because there’s definitely potential for abuse since anyone can add a hashtag to a tweet. I didn’t see anything too outrageous but I did see several examples of non-classified related posts.

Here are some of the classified ads I saw where the people are using the system in the way it’s intended.

ilist-ihave

Here are some ads where I’m not too sure the twits have grasped the concept.

ilist-iwant

I’m not sure how far this idea will go and it’s only a matter of time until the spammers, pornographers, penis enlargement pill pushers, and other assorted idiots jump onboard, so I wish the folks at iList Micro luck.

  • I tried it - I'm in Thailand - don't expect too many responses for my e71 Nokia phone. Do I need to follow them as well then? I'm going to their site here in a minute. Cool service if it works.
  • I think this is an excellent extension of the platform.

Verticals like this (a real estate vertical, furniture, musical instruments) along with a post-extension from a link (to a Craigslist or eBay type of image/description page) is brilliant. The SEO value of that would rock.

I wish these guys the best. Paul Rawlings founded a company called TweeBay last year (Christmas) but shuttered it recently over fears of brand conflict with eBay. This is my new fave 140 character playground.

    Well done, Phil & team,

  • I'm intrigued to know what would stop me from just using Twitter search on your hashtags thus bypassing the iList site altogether?

Not intending to disrespect at all, just genuinely curious.
  • Hey, you wont find any "spam" items on iList Micro, we personally go through and check all the listings when they are submitted to ensure that what people are getting are REAL classified tweets. Thanks for checking us out. Shoot me a tweet if you have any questions.
