Custom Twitter backgrounds are a great way to market yourself, your blog, your website or your company but they only work when people see them. Lots of people will see your background the first time they check out your profile but after that many of them will only view your tweets in TweetDeck or another 3rd-party application.

Here’s a tip to get your followers to visit your page more often and also generate new followers when they suggest that others follow you.

Change something on your background frequently and give people a reason to check to find out why.

For example: Suppose you write ebooks. Instead of tweeting a link to each new ebook, put a short link on your background and get your followers used to the idea of checking your profile page periodically for the new link. You’ll want to keep it short though since links aren’t clickable.

How about running weekly specials on a product or service you offer? Followers will visit your profile page to find out what the new offer is and if it’s a good deal they’ll  tell their followers about them and that will bring you more new targeted followers.

An option to using a link would be to put a keyword on your Twitter background. Tweet the url of the page where visitors can get a discount coupon or download a piece of free software that they can only get if they’ve visited your Twitter profile and gotten the latest keyword.

The more often you can get people to visit your profile page the more often you get your product or service in front of their eyeballs and that’s what marketing is all about.
